New Haven, Conn. - Despite rallying back from an early two-goal deficit, the Princeton men's hockey team fell 5-3 at Yale Saturday night. Junior Neil Stevenson-Moore scored twice as Princeton falls to 3-7-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the ECAC.
Territorially the first period belonged to the Tigers, but on the scoreboard it was Yale with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Princeton outshot Yale 11-6 in the period, but Yale put the first goal on the scoreboard midway through the first period.
After killing off a Tiger power play, the Bulldogs carried play into the Tiger end of the ice. Joe Zappala carried the puck in and ripped a slap shot that senior Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer blocked with his skate. The puck caromed into the corner and Zappala chased it down and fed Jeff Dwyer at the top of the circle who fired a shot that beat Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux above his stick hand. Yale extended its lead to 2-0 at 14:37 when Christian Jensen scored on the power play. Jeff Hristovski won a faceoff to Jensen on the right wing. Jensen then circled around the centerman and fired a slap shot to give Yale a 2-0 lead.
Princeton answered back four minutes later on a power play goal of its own. Senior Matt Maglione picked up the puck behind the Tiger net and carried the puck the length of the ice. Around the net, the Yale defense forced him behind the cage, where he sent a pass out in front for junior Neil Stevenson-Moore. Stevenson-Moore fanned on the shot, but got enough of it with the heel of his stick to slide it under the pads of Yale goaltender Josh Gartner and make it a one-goal game. The goal was Stevenson-Moore's second of the season.
Princeton continued to control play throughout the second period, again outshooting Yale, this time by a 9-4 margin. The Tigers finally broke through to even the core up at 2-2 when sophomore Patrick Neundorfer notched his third goal of the season. The goal came off the rush and started in the Tiger zone. Freshman Daryl Marcoux chipped the puck out of the zone to junior Mike Patton along the red line. Patton and Neundorfer found themselves on a 2-on-1 break going into the Yale end of the ice. Patton skated the puck in and at the last second fired a pass across the crease to Neundorfer who redirected it past Gartner and into the Yale net. The Tigers almost went ahead moments later, but Fouladgar-Mercer was robbed by Gartner to keep the score at two apiece.
Yale went back on top at 9:02 of the third period when Hristovski batted in a rebound. Jensen gained the puck off a face-off and fired the puck from a low angle into the crease. The puck bounced around and ended up on Hristovski's stick.
Princeton came within inches of tying the game while shorthanded with just over five minutes to go. Sophomore Mark Masters fed sophomore Brian Carthas on the doorstep and Carthas had two good shots that Gartner was able to smother. Play went the other way and Leroux made two equally impressive saves to keep the score at 3-2. However in the melee, he lost his stick and Yale was able to capitalize on the power play when Hristovski scored his second goal of the period.
But Princeton was not done, and at 17:43, Stevenson-Moore found the back of the net. Freshman Darroll Powe got the puck behind the Yale net and fed Stevenson-Moore in the slot, where he ripped it into a wide-open net. The assist was the first point of Powe's collegiate career. Maglione picked up his second assist of the game on the goal.
Princeton pulled Leroux far the extra attacker late, but was not able to penetrate the Yale zone and time expired.
The Tigers return to action next Friday night at Union.
