Schenectady, N.Y. - The Princeton men's hockey team earned its second shutout in three games as the Tigers posted a 4-0 win against Union Friday night at the Achilles Center. Senior Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer posted the game-winner two minutes into the game and sophomore goaltender Eric Leroux stopped all 16 shots to lead Princeton to its first road shutout since Nov. 18, 2000, a span of 55 road games.
The win improved Princeton to 4-7-0 overall and 4-5-0 ECAC. Princeton's fourth win surpasses its win total of the 2002-03 season, in which the Tigers posted a 3-26-2 record.
Union had a strong opening shift, but as soon as the first Dutchmen line left the ice, momentum swung Princeton's way. The Tigers got on the board right away on Fouladgar-Mercer's second goal of the season. Senior Matt Maglione fored a shot on net from the point that Union goaltender Kris Mayotte blocked. The rebound bounced out and Fouladgar-Mercer dove at it and shot it past Mayotte. Sophomore Dustin Sproat also added an assist on the goal. Leroux made stops on all seven shots he faced in the period. For the game, he made 16 saves and is now 4-7-0 on the season and he posted his second career shutout.
Princeton dominated the second period, scoring twice while outshooting the Dutchmen 11-2. Sophomore Patrick Neundorfer made the score 2-0 at 5:47 when he tallied his fourth goal of the season on the power play. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller wristed a shot on net that was blocked by Union's Scott Seney. The puck bounced to Neundorfer in front of the net and he beat Mayotte. Senior Steve Slaton added an assist on the goal.
The Tigers extended the lead at 13:26 when senior Chris Owen broke through with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Brian Carthas collected a pass from sophomore Mark Masters behind the Union net and then fed Owen on the doorstep. Owen recieved the pass, then scored on the short side with a wrister. Last season Owen led the Tigers with 17 goals.
Princeton added a final goal in the third period from sophomroe Seamus Young. His goal, the second of the season, came while the Tigers had a two-man advantage. Junior Mike Patton fed Young on the point, where he wristed a shot through a crowd that beat Mayotte. Fouladgar-Mercer added an assist for his second point of the game.
Princeton continues its ECAC weekend tomorrow night at Rensselaer. Game time is at 7 p.m.
