Parker Triumphs In Meeting Of Top 10 Wrestlers; Cornell Tops Princeton 35-9

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Princeton wrestling team dropped a 35-9 decision at No. 6 Cornell this evening in Ithaca, N.Y. The Tigers managed two wins during the night, although one of them proved to be one of the best matches of the EIWA season to date.
Cornell opened the night with a pair of technical falls at 157 and 165 pounds, and held a comfortable 14-0 team lead heading into the featured match of the evening at 184 pounds. No. 2 Clint Wattenberg, an NCAA quarterfinalist at this weight last year, took on No. 7 Greg Parker, an NCAA finalist at 174 pounds last season. Seven minutes weren't enough to decide a victor between these two. In fact, nine minutes weren't enough either.
Wattenberg led 4-1 heading into the second period thanks to a pair of early takedowns. Wattenberg chose the neutral position, but it was Parker who earned a takedown to cut the deficit to 4-3. Parker chose the defensive position in the third period and escaped to even the match at 4-4. Wattenberg followed with a takedown 33 seconds into the period, but a reversal by Parker evened the score at 6-6. Parker held on for the rest of the period to force overtime. In the first session, neither could score a takedown. Wattenberg chose the top in the second overtime, but couldn't ride Parker for the 30-second period. Parker escaped with 18.7 seconds remaining to give Princeton its first win of the night, and now has the inside track to the top seed in next month's EIWA championship tournament, which will be held at Cornell. Matt Fisher cut the team deficit to 14-9 when he pinned Mike Bollinger at the 6:36 mark, but the tough Cornell lightweights were dominant and pushed the Big Red to its ninth win of the season.
