Union scored twice in the second period to pull away from Princeton en route to a 6-2 win in men's hockey Saturday night at Achilles Rink in Schnectady, N.Y. Princeton's Mike Patton gave the Tigers an early lead, but Union stormed back to earn the win.
Union came out of the gates flying, as they looked to set the tone of the game early. Princeton withstood the early pressure and took advantage of a Union penalty to take a 1-0 lead just past the mid-point of the period. Steve Slaton worked the puck deep to Dustin Sproat in the corner. Sproat then fed the puck in front to Mike Patton who wristed a shot by Union goaltender Kris Mayotte for the 1-0 lead. Union answered right back however, and evened the score up at 11:02. Kris Goodjohn collected a rebound in front of the Princeton net and slid a puck under Tiger goaltender Nate Nomeland. Union carried its momentum into the second period scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room at the end of two stanzas. First, Goodjohn took advantage of three consecutive Princeton penalties and scored a power-play goal at 1:55 for his second goal of the evening. Matt Vagvolgyi also scored at 6:58 of the period. Union made it a 4-1 game 1:07 into the third period when Nathan Gillies carried the puck deep in the Princeton zone and slid a shot under Nomeland.
Princeton climbed back within two goals at 14:34 when Chirs Owen scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season off an end-to-end rush. Owen picked up the puck in the defensive zone and carried it to the Union zone where he fired a wristshot past Mayotte. Union's Randy Dagenais answered back 13 seconds later to regain the three goal lead for the Dutchmen.
Princeton takes on St. Lawrence next Friday night in Canton, N.Y.
