Brown Leads Princeton Past Yale 74-71 In Women's Basketball

Becky Brown scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Karen Bolster made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to lead Princeton to a 74-71 win over Yale in an Ivy League women's basketball game in front of 228 at Jadwin Gym.
Princeton trailed by nine points in the second half and by seven before scoring 25 points in the final 8:53 to rally for the win. The Tigers, who host Brown Saturday night (7), improved to 9-15 overall, 4-6 in the Ivy League, Yale fell to 5-19, 2-9.
Yale's Bonnie Smith had a career-high 26 points, including a three-pointer at the first half buzzer that made it 37-35 Bulldogs. Princeton would not regain the lead until Brown hit a pair of foul shots to make it 63-61 as 4:30 remained, and the lead would not change hands again, though the game wasn't decided until Christina Phillips missed a three-pointer as time expired. Princeton led by on at 69-68 after a Morgan Richards layup with 39 seconds to play. Brown then made the key play of the game, hitting a layup while getting fouled with 14 seconds to go. Her ensuing foul shot made it a 72-68 game, but Yale would not go away, as Phillips drilled a three-pointer with eight seconds to play to make it 72-71.
Bolster was then fouled on the inbounds, sending her to the line for two shots with eight seconds left. She swished both, leaving Yale with its final try that ended when Phillips' long three came up short.
Princeton senior Maureen Lane shot 6 for 9 from three-point range en route to a 20-point night. The Tigers shot 8 for 15 from beyond the arc as a team.
Kelly Schaefer was the third Princeton player in double figures with 10 points. Alison Cahill had just two points, but she added six assists and five rebounds.
Yale shot 10 for 29 from three-point range but hurt itself at the foul line, where the Bulldogs were just 3 for 10. Princeton shot 12 for 15 from the line, including a 5 for 5 performance from Brown.
Smith shot 11 for 20 from the field to eclipse her previous career-best of 24, which she had done on two previous occasions. Phillips had 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Morgan Richards added 12 for the Bulldogs.
