Washington, DC - Five Tigers head a list of 37 varsity lacrosse players in the United States that have been selected as candidates for the third annual Tewaaraton Award, the most prestigious award a varsity lacrosse player can receive as a symbol of excellence in college lacrosse.
Seniors Damien Davis, Brad Dumont and junior Ryan Boyle represent the men's lacrosse team on this year's ballot. Davis, a preseason first-team All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse Magazine, is a two-time second-team All-America selection. Dumont and Boyle were both second-team All-America honorees last season. Boyle, the 2001 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and 2002 Ivy League Player of the Year, is a preseason first-team All-America selection as well.
The women's lacrosse team's two candidates are also its two returning All-America selections. Senior Rachael Becker and junior Theresa Sherry both earned first-team honors last season. Becker was also an Academic All-America while leading the nation's top-ranked defense to a national title. Sherry provided offense for the Tigers last season with 56 points and coupled her first-team All-America honor with a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection. Becker was named the Inside Lacrosse Magazine Defensive Player of the Year and was a Tewaaraton Finalist. The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented annually following the collegiate season to the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse players in the country. Scholarship money is given to the recipient's college or university general scholarship fund. The Foundation committee honors Native American heritage with the name "Tewaaraton," the name the Mohawk nation gave to their game and the progenitor of present day lacrosse and has received approval from the Mohawk Council of Elders.
Every qualified male and female college varsity player in Divisions I, II and III is eligible for the Award. Nominations are requested from all varsity coaches. A selection committee comprised of coaches for both male and female candidates oversees the voting process. Candidates who emerge during the season will be added to wildcard spots. Five finalists for both the men and women will be announced in May.
The Tewaaraton Trophy Awards Dinner will be presented at The University Club of Washington, DC on June 4, 2002, at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.
