Philadelphia - Ryan Boyle had five assists before suffering a hamstring injury that will sideline the All-America attackman indefinitely as Princeton defeated Penn 12-6 at Franklin Field Tuesday afternoon.
Princeton, ranked second in this week's USILA poll, won its fifth straight to improve to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers return home Friday night to face Quinnipiac. Penn fell to 4-4, 1-2.
"Hopefully Ryan won't be out too long," said Princeton senior Matt Trevenen, who moved from midfield to take Boyle's spot as the feeder after the injury. "He's the biggest part of our offense."
Boyle's injury came with 3:37 to go in the third quarter and the Tigers ahead 10-6. He made a move towards the goal from the right and pulled up just before letting his shot go. Boyle is Princeton's leading scorer this season with 30 points (six goals, 24 assists), and he has led Princeton in scoring each of his first two seasons. He was the 2002 Ivy League Player of the Year and 2001 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, as well as a member of the U.S. national team that won the gold medal at last summer's World Championships in Australia.
"Obviously he won't play Friday," Princeton coach Bill Tierney said. "We hope to get him back. It's tough to win without your quarterback. We'll have to wait and see what George [O'Neill, Princeton's athletic trainer] and the doctors say. If he's out awhile, it'll test some other people."
Penn gave Princeton a solid test before falling to the Tigers for the 14th straight time. The game was 3-2 after the first quarter and 7-6 after Luke Dixson's goal with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter.
Princeton, though, stormed back immediately. The Tigers won the face-off and scored 12 seconds after Dixson's goal, when Boyle fed Jason Doneger to make it 8-6. Princeton added another 39 seconds later when Boyle found Sean Hartofilis on the doorstep for his fifth assist of the day.
The lead grew to four when Drew Casino scored his first of the season on the first career assist by Doneger, who had 17 goals for the season and 26 for his career before picking up an assist.
Princeton then shut Penn out in the fourth quarter, adding Josh White's third goal and Trevenen's second, to go along with two assists.
"The good news is that we picked it up and won the game," Tierney said. "The bad news is that you can't think you can always turn it on when you have to. That's called living dangerously. You have to give Penn a lot of credit. They played hard. We hung in there."
Brad Dumont and Will MacColl also scored twice each for Princeton, which got nine of its 12 goals from the midfield. D.J.. Andrzejewski scored twice for Penn, while Patrick Rogers had three assists.
Julian Gould made 13 saves while allowing six goals for the Tigers.
Princeton has played five straight road games. The road team has won all seven Princeton games this season.
