Syracuse, N.Y. - Michael Powell scored four goals and added three assists to lead Syracuse to a 15-5 win over Princeton in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament at the Carrier Dome.
The Orangemen advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the 21st consecutive season.
Princeton trailed 2-1 midway through the first quarter before Syracuse erupted for nine straight to build an 11-1 lead in the third quarter. The Tigers would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
"We ran into a buzz saw today," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "That's all there is to it."
Sean Hartofilis scored three goals to move into eighth place all-time in NCAA tournament goals scored with 27 in 11 games. Hartofilis finished his career with 126 goals, third-best all-time at Princeton. Ryan Boyle, playing despite two pulled hamstrings, had two assists, tying him with Jon Hess for the school single-season record with 48. Hartofilis and Jason Doneger finished the season with 41 goals each, tied for the team lead. They became the second Princeton teammates to score 40 goals in the same season, along with Jesse Hubbard and Chris Massey, who did it twice.
"It's a tough way to end your career," said Princeton's Damien Davis, who started every game for four years. "They were great. Powell was great."
Davis had shut Powell out, the only time in Powell's career he had been pointless, in Princeton's 11-10 win at the Carrier Dome in March. This time Powell had three goals and two assists before halftime.
"The fact that the game was at the Carrier Dome didn't make a difference," Hartofilis said.
Princeton finishes its season at 11-4 with a ninth-straight Ivy League title. The Tigers graduate 13 seniors.
