Final Stats
Shahrzad Joharifad, Ashley Sennett and Claire Miller each scored early first-half goals and Natalie Martirosian added two assists as the Princeton field hockey team defeated Drexel, 5-1, in a game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Princeton (2-0), which had come from behind to defeat Virginia to open the season Friday night, left no doubt on Saturday by scoring three times in the game's first 17 minutes to take control. Joharifard rocketed a shot on a penalty corner situation 6:20 into the game for a 1-0 Tiger lead, and Ashley Sennett then used some nice one-on-one moves to give Princeton a 2-0 advantage five minutes later. Claire Miller then gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead six minutes after that thanks to a quick feed in front from Martirosian. Martirosian also had an assist on Lauren Ehrlichman's goal with just under seven minutes left in the game. Drexel (0-1) had just five shots for the game and scored only on its first, a Caliann Bogovic goal late in the first half.
Lauren Quinn also scored a goal midway through the second half for the Tigers, who improved to 2-0 for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. Princeton also improved to 5-0 all-time against Drexel, having outscored the Dragons 23-2 in those five games.
Katie Dougherty had four saves in goal for Drexel, while Patty De Bow added three defensive saves to help keep the Dragons in the game. Lauren Zukowski added an assist on Bogovic's late first-half goal for the Dragons.
Princeton improved to 65-10 (.867) all-time at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers open their Ivy League season at home next Saturday against Yale (noon) and then host Penn State, which knocked them out of the NCAA tournament in 2002, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
