Ithaca, N.Y. - Cornell scored two goals in all three periods to defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 6-1 Friday night at Lynah Rink. Princeton's line goal came early in the third period from freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller.
Cornell used a strong start to take a 2-0 lead in the first half of the period. Matt Moulson opened the scoring at 1:59 on a slap shot that beat Princeton netminder Eric Leroux and trickled into the net. The Big Red extended the lead to 2-0 at the 7:26 mark on a power play tally when Ryan Vesce carried the puck in along the left boards and drive to the net where he scored just under the cross bar.
Cornell continued its strong play in the second period outshooting the Tigers by a 16-4 margin. Shane Hynes scored to make it 3-0 by shooting a loose puck into the Princeton net at 9:54. Hynes made it 4-0 at the 17:20 mark when he jammed a loose puck in the net. Princeton made it 4-1 4:25 into the third period on Goeckner-Zoeller's fifth goal of the season. Senior Steve Slaton intercepted a Cornell clearing attempt at the blue line and fed sophomore Dustin Sproat. Sproat carried the puck to the right face-off dot and fed a cross-ice pass that Goeckner-Zoeller one-timed past Cornell goaltender David McKee. It was Goeckner-Zoeller's team-leading 15th point of the year.
Cornell's Evan Salmela scored at 13:18 and Moulson scored at 17:32 to give Cornell the 5-1 victory. Princeton is now 5-18-1 with the loss. The Tigers continue their road trip tomorrow night at Colgate.
