Hamilton, N.Y. - Colgate scored three times in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 4-2 Saturday night at Starr Rink. Sophomore Mark Masters opened the scoring for Princeton in the first period and freshman Kevin Westgarth scored late in the third, but it was not enough as Colgate posted the victory.
Masters put Princeton on the board when he redirected a point shot from sophomore Brett Westgarth as a power play expired. The goal came at 19:30 of the first period and sent Colgate to the first intermission with a 1-0 advantage. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller assisted on the goal. The lead was shortlived however as Colgate scored twice in the next three minutes of game time and took a 2-1 lead. First Darryl McKinnon one-timed a pass to score at the 1:31 mark of the second, then Kyle Doyle evaded the Princeton defense and snuck in on net to score. Doyle extended the lead to 3-1 with the eventual game winner when he scored at 19:57 of the period after a wide point shot caromed off the end boards and on to his stick.
Adam Mitchell made it 4-1 Colgate 44 seconds into the third period to make it 4-1 and the Colgate defense took over from there, keeping Princeton shotless in the period until the 19:12 mark. Princeotn had two shots in the period and scored a power play goal on the second one as Kevin Westgarth knocked down a point shot from freshman Max Cousins and batted into the Colgate net. Freshman Daryl Marcoux also assisted on the goal.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Eric Leroux made 28 saves in the loss while Steve Silverthorn stopped 15 Princeton shots in the win.
Princeton resumes play next Friday night at Dartmouth.
