Hanover, N.H. - Senior Matt Maglione scored twice and freshman B.J. Sklapsky made 38 saves as the Princeton men's hockey team posted a 2-2 tie at Dartmouth Friday night. After falling behind 1-0, Maglione scored early in both the first and second periods as Princeton posted its second tie of the season.
Dartmouth opened the scoring at 12:08 of the first period on Sean Offers' second goal of the season. The Big Green took advantage of a poor Princeton clearing attempt and Eric Przepiorka found offers in front. Offers took a shot that found the upper right corner of the net and quickly bounced out, but linesman Kevin Redding pointed that the puck had indeed went in and Dartmouth took an early lead. The score remained 1-0 Dartmouth through the end of the first period, but it was Princeton that answered back early in the second on the power play to knot the game at two apiece. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller found the puck down low in the offensive zone and fed classmate Kevin Westgarth in the corner. Westgarth found Maglione on the left point and Maglione fired a bullet that beat Dartmouth netminder Dan Yacey through the legs. It was Maglione's third goal of the season and Goeckner-Zoeller's team-leading 17th point.
As play began in the third period, the Tigers again struck quick to take a 2-1 lead. After a flurry in front of the Dartmouth net, Princeton broke up a Big Green clearing attempt as Westgarth broke up a play and fed senior Chris Owen. Owen then found Maglione on the opposite point where he skated in two strides and fired a shot just inside the upper right corner of the net that beat Yacey high on the glove side.
Princeton held the lead until the 17:54 mark when Dartmouth took advantage of a power play to even the score at 2-2. Hugh Jessiman received the puck at the point and after his first shot was blocked by the Princeton penalty killers, he fired a second shot that found its way through the crowd and bounced off the far post and into the Tiger net. For the second time in the game, the Dartmouth fans threw debris on the ice after the goal and the Big Green was assessed a penalty that left them shorthanded for almost the remainder of regulation, but despite controlling the puck throughout the power play, Princeton was unable to score and the game went to overtime.
Both teams had strong scoring chances in the third, but Sklapsky stood out as he stopped several strong Dartmouth chances to preserve the tie, the second of his career. Princeton is now 0-3-2 in overtime games this season.
Sklapsky finished the night with 38 saves while Yacey made 27 as both earned ties.
Princeton completes its road trip tomorrow night at Vermont.
