Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey dropped a 5-1 decision to Rensselaer Saturday night at Baker Rink. Freshman Kevin Westgarth scored to make the score 1-1 early in the first period, but a fortuitous RPI bounce gave the Engineers a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Kevin Croxton opened the scoring at the 3:42 as he backhanded a centering pass into the upper right corner of the net 16 seconds into a power play. The Tigers answered back 18 seconds later to know the game at one apiece when Westgarth hammered home a rebound. It was his third goal of the season and was assisted by sophomore Patrick Neundorfer and freshman B.J. Mackasey. It was Mackasey's first career point.
Princeton continued to pressure in the first but Rensselaer netminder Nathan Marsters made 13 first-period saves to keep the score at 1-1 until Kevin Broad and the Engineers took advantage a great bounce to go ahead 2-1. Ben Barr forced the puck in the crease and the puck bounced off of several skates before hitting off of Mackasey and into the Tiger goal. Broad was credited with the goal.
The score remained the same through the second period and into the third until Ryan Shields gave Rensselaer an insurance goal at 1:35 of the third. Brad Farnyuk made it 4-1 40 seconds later and Kirk MacDonald added a tally at 15:21 for the final of 5-1.
Princeton completes the regular season and honors the Class of 2004 tomorrow night when the Tigers face Union at 7 p.m.
