Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to Union Saturday night in the regular season finale at Baker Rink. Trailing 2-1 in the third, sophomore Dustin Sproat scored with 58 seconds left to force overtime, but in the extra session, Union's Brent Booth fired a shot that bounced off both posts and into the Princeton net to give the Dutchmen a 3-2 victory.
The first period belonged to Union as the Dutchmen outshot the Tigers 20-9. Union also outscored Princeton in the period, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The goal was scored by Jonathan Poirer on the power play after his first shot was saved by Princeton freshman goaltender B.J. Sklapsky.
In the second, play evened out and this time Princeton outshot Union 15-12 and scored the period's only goal when freshman Ian McNally hammered home a rebound past Union netminder Kris Mayotte at 12:22 of the second for his first career goal. The goal was assisted by seniors Matt Maglione and Steve Slaton, both skating in the final home contest of their Princeton careers, along with Chris Owen, Dan Hursh and Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer. Princeton carried play throughout the third period, limiting the Dutchmen to just one shot on net. As luck would have it though, that one shot went in and left the Dutchmen with a 2-1 lead as time dwindled down thanks to Poirer's second goal of the night. Union, needing a win to secure home ice in next weekend's ECAC playoffs, was unable to quell the Tigers though, and with 58 seconds remaining and the goaltender pulled, Sproat tallied his sixth of the year to tie up the game and send it to overtime. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and sophomore Patrick Neundorfer assisted on the goal.
In overtime, play went back and forth until Booth scored at 4:25 to win the game. Poirer assisted on the goal for his third point of the night.
Sklapsky and Mayotte each finished the night with 34 saves. For Sklapsky it was third time in three starts that the game went into overtime.
