Princeton, N.J. - After two even periods, Mercyhurst scored twice early in the third to post a 4-2 victory over the Princeton women's hockey team at Baker Rink on Saturday afternoon. Princeton's goals came from senior Angela Gooldy and freshman Laura Watt.
Mercyhurst took one-goal leads in both the first and second periods, but Princeton goals from senior Angela Gooldy and freshman Laura Watt left the game tied at two entering the third period.
The Lakers opened the scoring just past halfway of the first period when Chrissy Yule found herself all alone in front and she sent a wrist shot past the glove of Princeton netminder Megan Van Beusekom. The Lakers held the lead until the final minute of the period when Gooldy blasted a point shot by Mercyhurst goaltender Desi Clark. Senior Lisa Rasmussen won an offensive zone draw back to Gooldy on the point where she teed up her second goal of the season. The second period mirrored the first with Mercyhurst going ahead 2-1 at the 3:49 mark when Sarah Kurth pushed in a puck following a scramble just outside of the crease. Princeton fought back though and just as a Laker penalty expired freshman Liz Keady found Watt to make the score 2-2. Keady picked up a loose puck and carried it along the boards to the corner where she waited for a teammate to go to the net. That teammate was Watt and Keady fed her a pass that she redirected into the goal for her 10th of the year. The period ended tied at two, despite the Tigers holding an 11-6 shot advantage.
With one period left to decide the game, it was Mercyhurst that came out strong in the third period, scoring two goals in a span of 44 seconds to establish a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish. First Sara McDonald tallied a power play goal at 3:20, then Samantha Shirley scored at 4:04.
Clark finished the day with 22 saves and improved to 23-4-4 while Van Beusekom made 19 saves and fell to 14-7 on the season.
Princeton plays its final home game of the season tomorrow afternoon against Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
