Justin Redd scored 1:03 into overtime to give 11th-ranked Cornell a 12-11 win over No. 5 Princeton in front of 3,121 at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Redd's goal came after Princeton scored three times in the final 1:49 to force overtime.
The victory snapped an eight-game Cornell losing streak against Princeton and put the Big Red in position to claim the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which they would do with a win at home against Brown next week.
"I thought after the comeback that we had the momentum," said Princeton's Ryan Boyle, who tied the game at 11-11 with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. "But they got possession, and they did what they had to do. Give [Redd] a lot of credit. He was very smart and very patient."
Cornell's J.D. Nelson won the face-off to start the overtime. After a Big Red timeout, the ball went behind the net to Redd, who was isolated on Tiger shortstick Jared Keating. Redd tried to beat Keating to get in front, but Keating forced him back behind the net. Redd then regrouped, came around the left side of the net and bounced the ball into the net for the game-winner. Princeton and Cornell each have one loss in the Ivy League, and should the teams tie at the end of the season, Cornell would get the automatic bid to the tournament by virtue of the victory over the Tigers. Princeton is at Dartmouth next weekend and at Brown the weekend after; both the Big Green and Bears have two league losses after Brown's 9-6 win over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.
"It was a frustrating day," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "You have to give all the credit to Cornell. They played a great game."
Cornell trailed 6-5 at the half before building an 11-8 advantage early in the fourth quarter. The Big Red then had possession much of the remainder of the fourth quarter but could not add to the lead.
Princeton then made a furious rally, getting goals from Jason Doneger and Drew Casino 34 seconds apart to make it 11-10 with 1:15 left. Boyle then tied the game with 24 seconds left off a feed from Whitney Hayes.
Cornell won the face-off but turned the ball over with seven seconds to play. Princeton goalie Dave Law hurled the ball the length of the field, and Boyle just missed getting clean possession in front of the Cornell net as time ran out.
"I thought if Ryan could have caught the ball there, we might have won it there," Tierney said.
Cornell was led by Andrew Collins with two goals and three assists and Redd with two goals and two assists.
Boyle had a goal and four assists for the Tigers, while Casino had three goals and Hayes had three assists. Peter Trombino had a goal for the 10th straight game, tying Lorne Smith's 1996 school record for consecutive games with at least one goal to start a freshman season.
The game was preceded by a moment of silence in honor of George Boiardi, the Cornell lacrosse player killed during a game earlier this year, and the game program was dedicated to his memory.
