More madness - Princeton has won six NCAA championships since 1992.
Quarter-ly report - Princeton is appearing in the NCAA quarterfinals for the 14th time in 15 years; the only time since 1990 that Princeton was not in the quarterfinals was in 1999, when the Tigers hosted the quarterfinal round. Fear the turtle - The 2004 quarterfinal will be Princeton's fifth game against Maryland since 1994; all five have come in the NCAA tournament. The last meeting was in the 2000 quarterfinals at Rutgers, won by Princeton 10-7.
More turtle - Princeton defeated Maryland in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA championship games.
History lesson - Princeton and Maryland first met in 1927; they would not play again until 1938.
More history - Princeton and Maryland played every year from 1938 through 1971 except for the World War II years of 1944 and 1945.
First time for everything - Of the 32 players who played in Princeton's 12-4 win over Rutgers last Saturday in the opening round, only eight had ever played in an NCAA tournament game before.
More first time - Of Princeton's 10 starters against Rutgers last week, only three (Ryan Boyle, Ricky Schultz, Jason Doneger) had ever started an NCAA tournament game before.
Last first - Prior to last weekend against Rutgers, Ryan Boyle and Jason Doneger had been the only two Princeton players to score a goal in an NCAA tournament game.
Fresh faces - Princeton freshmen Whitney Hayes, Peter Trombino and Scott Sowanick combined for five goals and two assists in the 12-4 win over Rutgers last weekend.
More fresh - Princeton's freshmen have combined to score 47 goals in 13 games; Princeton's freshmen last year combined for one goal, and Princeton's freshmen the year before combined for no goals.
Still more fresh - Freshmen Peter Trombino (33), Scott Sowanick (23) and Whitney Hayes (23) all have at least 20 points this season. The only other time Princeton had three freshmen with at least 20 points in the same season was 1995, when Jesse Hubbard, Chris Massey and Jon Hess all had at least 27.
Last fresh - Peter Trombino (22-11) and Scott Sowanick (13-10) are two of five Princeton freshmen ever to have double figures in goals and assists; Whitney Hayes has nine goals and 14 assists.
Triple play - All three of Princeton's losses have come to teams who advanced to the quarterfinals (Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Cornell).
Yes, Virginia - Princeton defeated Virginia 8-7 at Klockner Stadium in Week 3 this season; it was Princeton's first win in Charlottesville since 1994.
The whammy - Princeton is 22-0 against teams other than Syracuse in NCAA games since 1992.
Close shaves - Princeton has played 35 NCAA tournament games, of which 21 have been decided by one or two goals. Princeton is 18-3 in those 21 games.
Highly offensive - Despite graduating Sean Hartofilis, the third-leading goal scorer in school history and eighth-leading goal scorer in NCAA tournament history, as well as the top five scoring midfielders, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring offense (10.7 goals per game) and averaged 0.4 goals per game fewer than a year ago.
Highly defensive- Despite graduating its two-year starting goalie, two four-year starters on close defense, a four-year starter at longstick midfield and the top shortstick defensive midfielder from a year ago, Princeton has allowed fewer goals per game this year (8.15) than last year (8.20).
A league of their own - Princeton tied Cornell for the Ivy League championship, marking the 10th straight time that Princeton has won at least a share of the Ivy title.
More league - Princeton is 78-6 in Ivy League games since 1991.
Still more league - Ryan Boyle holds the Ivy League record for assists in a league season (32) and career (88).
I'm honored - Ryan Boyle is the 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year. Boyle, who also won in 2002, joined Cornell's Eamon McEneaney (1975, 1977) as the only two players ever to be named Ivy League Player of the Year twice.
More honored - Peter Trombino is the 2004 Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Still more honored - Ryan Boyle, Ricky Schultz and Oliver Barry were named first-team All-Ivy League this season; Jason Doneger and Drew Casino were second-team selections.
Seeing 20-40 - Ryan Boyle needs one goal and one assist to join Kevin Lowe and Jon Hess as the only Princeton players ever with at least 20 goals and 40 assists in the same season.
Seeing 20-10 - Peter Trombino is one of three Princeton players in the last 10 years with at least 20 goals and 10 assists in the same season (Jon Hess, Ryan Boyle).
Starting over - Princeton graduated 11 four-year contributors, including seven four-year starters, after the 2003 season.
More starting over - Princeton had four players who had ever started a game prior to the start of the 2004 season (Ryan Boyle, Jason Doneger, Ricky Schultz, Oliver Barry).
Face it - Princeton used four different face-off men in the first half against Rutgers last weekend.
