NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Highlighted by a win at No. 1 from Julian Illingworth, the Yale men's squash team stayed atop the Ivy League standings by defeating Princeton 8-1 on Saturday. Freshman Tom McKay earned Princeton's lone win at No. 5.
The win should clinch a top three spot for Yale in the national team tournament, while Princeton will have to fight for either the fourth or fifth position. The Tigers are now 3-2 overall, 2-2 in the Ivy League.
The Tigers, who fell 6-3 to Yale last season, got their only win from McKay, one of a talented group of freshmen who are aiming to get Princeton back atop the Ivy League standings next year.
The highlight match of the day came at No. 1, and it featured arguably the best rivalry in college squash right now. Illingworth became the only player in the nation to own two career wins over El Halaby when he rallied from two games down to win 3-2. It was revenge for two seasons ago, when El Halaby rallied from two games down at Yale to pull out a 3-2 win of his own. El Halaby, the two-time defending national champion, owns a 3-2 advantage over Illingworth on the collegiate level. They have never met in the individual national championships. Yale 8, Princeton 1
