Schenectady, N.Y. - Union killed off back-to-back five-minute majors early in the third period to regain momentum and post a 6-2 win over the Princeton men's hockey team Friday night at the Achilles Center. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, freshman Lee Jubinville and junior Kevin Westgarth scored for Princeton in the second period.
Princeton fell to 2-3 on the season and fell under .500 for the first time. The Tigers are now 1-2 in ECACHL action. Union is 4-4-1 overall and 1-2 in ECACHL play.
The teams played an even first period with both taking 12 shots on goal, but it was Union that took the most advantage of its chances as the Dutchmen scored twice to take a 2-0 lead to the locker room for the first intermission.
Josh Coyle started the scoring at 12:22 of the first when he scored his sixth goal of the season. Coyle gained the blueline and fired a shot that fooled Tiger junior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky and bounced by him. Late in the period Union made it 2-0 when Jonathan Poirier decided to shoot on a two-on-one and beat Sklapsky over his right shoulder and off the crossbar. The goals were the first that Princeton has allowed in the first period this season.
Momentum bounced back and forth in the second as Princeton scored twice to tie the score 2-2, but then Union added two more to make the score 4-2 after two periods. Princeton scored the period's first goal on the power play when off the face-off, junior Max Cousins sprung junior Darroll Powe on a semi-breakaway. Powe faked a shot to pull the defenders, then fed freshman Lee Jubinville who buried the pass for his first collegiate goal. The goal came 11 seconds into the power play. Princeton evened the score 1:29 later on another power play, this time needing only eight seconds to score. The face was won back to junior Daryl Marcoux, who fed junior Brett Westgarth cross point. Westgarth one-timed a shot towards the net that was blocked. Freshman Brett Wilson got a swipe at the puck that was saved, but junior Kevin Westgarth was the first man to the next rebound and he scored to make the score 2-2.
Union battled back though, and at 15:16 Augie DiMarzo scored a Union power-play goal off a rebound to regain the lead for Union. The Dutchmen were not done in the period as DiMarzo set up Torren Delforte with 2:19 remaining in the period to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
Princeton had an excellent opportunity to get back into the game early in the third when Union took back-to-back five-minute major penalties. Princeton had more than seven minutes of continuous power-play time, 2:06 of it in a 5-on-3, but could not score and get back into the game. The penalty kills were a turning point for Union as the Dutchmen took the momentum from killing the penalties and used it to take a 5-2 lead on a goal by Jason Visser on their first good scoring chance of the third. Coyle added his second goal of the game late in the third period on a Union 5-on-3.
Sklapsky made 24 saves in the loss for Princeton, while Kris Mayotte made 28 saves for Union. The final shots were even 31-31.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow night at Rensselaer.
