Troy, N.Y. - Freshman Brett Wilson scored early in the third period to even the score at 1-1 but Rensselaer scored three times later in the period to lift the Engineers to a 4-1 win over Princeton men's hockey team on Saturday night at the Houston Fieldhouse. The goal was the first of Wilson's collegiate career.
Princeton found itself in penalty trouble early in the first period and Rensselaer took advantage with a power-play goal at 8:22 when Oren Eizenman scored on RPI's third power-play chance of the game.
The teams skated scoreless in the second period and Rensselaer held the 1-0 lead early in the third period. That lead evaporated at 1:06 of the third period when Wilson batted home his first career goal for the Tigers. The point marked his second in as many games since joining the lineup after a preseason injury. Freshmen Lee Jubinville and Brandan Kushniruk added assists on the goal.
The game was tied for 6:39 before Rensselaer regained the lead and added insurance on a pair of breakaway goals. Both came from Jonathan Ornealas. On the first he was sprung with a breakaway pass and on the second he won the race to the puck after it ricocheted off a blocked shot.
Keith MCWilliams sealed the win with an empty-netter at 19:12 of the third.
Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux finished the night with 31 saves while Matthias Lange made 28 for Rensselaer.
Princeton fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the ECAC Hockey League with the loss. The Tigers travel to Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend.
