ITHACA, N.Y. - Men's squash head coach Bob Callahan was excited to show off his new faces in Sunday's season-opening competitions against Western Ontario and Cornell, but he was also excited to see some old faces make their triumphant returns to the program. And anytime Yasser El Halaby takes the court for Princeton, that's always a good thing too.
Yes, there was definitely enough good feelings to go around for the men's squash team in its season openers, an 8-1 win against Western Ontario and a 9-0 win over Cornell in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
Freshmen Mauricio Sanchez (2), Kimlee Wong (3) and Hesham El Halaby (4) all won both of their opening matches. They won nine of 10 games against Cornell; only Hesham El Halaby, the younger brother of Yasser El Halaby, dropped a game, and his was to the former No. 1 player at Cornell, Matt Serediak. El Halaby bounced back to win the final three games of his match.
Nate Beck returned to the team after taking last year off, and he came back with a pair of wins in his return matches, as did Yasser El Halaby, who is hoping he took a successful first step to an eventual fourth national title.
