LANCASTER, Pa. - Despite holding a 14-12 lead with two matches remaining, the Princeton wrestling team suffered a disappointing 20-14 loss in its EIWA opener at Franklin & Marshall Wednesday night. The Tigers led early thanks to another dominant effort from 197-pound senior Jake Butler.
Butler, who earned an invitation to the NCAA championships last year, opened the night with a 15-0 technical fall against Nico Somers in the first match of the contest. Heavyweight Ian Roncoroni looked to build on that lead and had a third-period advantage, but a late reversal by Shawn Coughlin turned the tide and gave the Diplomats their first win of the evening.
Another pair of tight wins in the lowerweights gave Franklin & Marshall a 9-5 lead when Eric Marcotulli took the mat for Princeton in the 141-pound match. The veteran grappler took Joe Perretta out with an 11-4 win, and teammate Andrew Iannuzzi followed it up with an exciting 14-13 win at 149 pounds. That win gave the lead back to Princeton, an 11-8 advantage that Franklin & Marshall quickly took back with a win at 157 pounds.
Once again, Princeton rallied for a win at 165 pounds, as Marty Everin defeated Justin Herbert 11-6 to open a 14-12 lead with two matches remaining. It wouldn't be enough, as the Diplomats earned major decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to claim the match.
Princeton fell to 4-1 with the loss.
