PRINCETON - The Princeton wrestling team opened a two-weekend homestand Friday evening by falling 32-11 to the Brown Bears. The Tigers earned three individual wins, including tri-captain Charlie Wiggins, who earned a 9-0 shutout.
Wiggins' victory came in the second match of the evening, and cut the Princeton deficit to 6-4. Mike Pedro (174) and Doran Heist (184) each won by decision for the visiting Bears, who jumped out to a 12-4 lead.
Junior Jake Butler, ranked sixth at 197 pounds in the latest EIWA rankings, got Princeton to within four points by defeating Leo Saniuk 10-2. Butler worked especially hard in the final two periods to get enough takedowns for the major decision, including his final one during the final seconds of the match. The following match was critical, as Princeton heavyweight Kris Berr battled back from an early deficit to get back into his match against Levon Mock. Berr nearly hit a couple of takedowns, but Mock fought them off and ended up with the takedown that iced the match. He carried that momentum into the final 45 seconds and eventually turned and pinned Berr.
That win ignited a run for the Bears, who won the next three matches, including a 13-1 victory for Brown freshman Mark Savino, who became the first freshman from Princeton's own Mercer County to win a state title when he won it last year.
Princeton's Andrew Iannuzzi gave the fans a treat with an exciting 11-6 victory to end the match. Both Iannuzzi and Tim Smith wrestled a quick-paced match, and it was Iannuzzi getting the late takedowns to earn the 11-6 win.
Princeton will welcome the Harvard Crimson to Dillon Gym Saturday at 2 p.m.
