Tigers Climb into First-Place Tie with Tie at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The seventh-ranked Princeton women's hockey team jumped to an early lead, then trailed twice in the third before rallying to a 5-5 tie on Friday night at Yale. Junior Laura Watt and sophomore Marykate Oakley each had a goal and assist in the tie as Princeton moved into a four-way tie atop the league standings along with Clarkson, Harvard and St. Lawrence.
Princeton jumped to a 1-0 lead 3:36 into the game when sophomore Brittany Salmon scored her seventh goal of the season and her second in as many games. Junior Kim Pearce set up the goal, notching her team-leading 20th assist of the season. Princeton made the score 2-0 at 12:11 when Oakley scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted.
Princeton took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, which Yale chipped away at in the second period. Jenna Spring scored on the power play 44 seconds into the period to make the score 2-1, then Kelsey Johnson scored at 10:46 to make it 2-2.
Senior Sarah Butsch regained the lead for Princeton at 14:12 when she tallied goal number four on the season. Senior Heather Jackson and Oakley assisted on the goal. Yale's Crysti Howser closed out the second-period scoring when she recorded her second of four points on the night with 1:35 left in the second. Yale took its first lead of the night at 10:18 of the third period when Ann-Renee Guillemette scored. The lead, however, only lasted 1:31 until Princeton drew even on freshman Annie Greenwood's team-leading 12th goal of the season. Watt had the assist on the goal.
Yale jumped right back 1:29 later to go ahead 5-4 on Howser's second goal of the night, but that lead only lasted 1:49 before Watt scored the game-tying goal, her fifth of the year, at 15:31.
Regulation ended with the team's tied 5-5, and neither team could score in overtime.
Princeton senior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel made 21 saves in 65 minutes, while Yale's Sarah Love made 32 saves for Yale.
Princeton plays at Brown tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
