Princeton To Play Hopkins At M&T Bank Stadium As Part Of Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic; Tigers to play 13 regular season games and host quarterfinals
November 07, 2006 | Men's Lacrosse
The Princeton men's lacrosse team and three of its biggest rivals will spend the first weekend of March in the same place they hope to finish the season on Memorial Day weekend.
Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Virginia – who have combined to win every NCAA championship since 1991 – will meet March 3 at M&T Bank Stadium in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic. Syracuse will meet defending NCAA champion Virginia in the noon opener, followed by Princeton and Hopkins.
The season ends Memorial Day with the NCAA championship game on that same M&T Bank Stadium turf.
The Princeton-Johns Hopkins game would have been played on the Princeton campus were it not being moved for the inaugural event.
Princeton's season actually opens a week before the trip to Baltimore, when the Tigers host Canisius at Class of 1952 Stadium on Feb. 24. The Hopkins game is followed a week later by a game at Virginia as the Tigers spend the first two Saturdays of March playing the Blue Jays and Cavaliers for the 15th straight season.
The trip to Charlottesville will be the first road game in an eight-day stretch for Princeton, who will be at Rutgers Tuesday night, March 13, and then at Hofstra Saturday, March 17. The final non-league game will be the following Saturday at home against Bellarmine.
The Ivy League season opens at Yale Saturday, March 31. After that, the only remaining non-league game is the renewal of another of lacrosse's great rivalries as Syracuse comes to Princeton Saturday, April 7.
Princeton Stadium will host one of the NCAA quarterfinal doubleheaders as well, which may be a bad omen for the home team: The only times since 1990 that Princeton has not reached at least the quarterfinals were in 1999 and 2005, the only times Princeton has hosted the quarterfinal doubleheader.
Princeton went 11-5 in 2006, earning a share of the Ivy Leage title and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Princeton returns eight starters after graduating midfielder Jim O'Brien and defenseman Ryan Schoenig, including five players who earned All-America honors in 2006: first-team selection Alex Hewit in goal, second-team defenseman Dan Cocoziello, third-team defenseman Zachary Jungers and honorable mention attackman Peter Trombino and midfielder Mark Kovler.
Jungers, Trombino and midfielder Scott Sowanick will be the 2007 Princeton captains.
