Oakley's Shorthanded Goal Lifts Tigers to Win
December 09, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
DETROIT -- Junior Marykate Oakley scored Princeton's lone goal and classmate Kristen Young made 26 saves as the ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team shut out Wayne State 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Detroit's City Ice Arena. The loss snapped a five-game losing skid for the Tigers and salvaged their weekend trip to Wayne State with a split.
The only scoring of the game came in the second period when Oakley scored shorthanded at 13:17 of the second period from sophomore Katherine Dineen.
After outshooting Wayne State on Friday night the Tigers were outshot by the Warriors on Saturday night. Young stopped all 26 shots she faced for the win and shutout, while Valery Turcotte made 24 saves in the loss.
Princeton is now off for 30 days for the holidays before returning to action at Baker Rink on Dec. 30 for a two game series against 10th-ranked Ohio State.
