John Bennett, who led a Princeton defense that limited Johns Hopkins to four goals and 32 shots in a 6-4 Princeton win Saturday afternoon, has been named the first Ivy League Player of the Week for the 2006 season.
Bennett forced seven turnovers in one-on-one situations as Princeton held the Blue Jays to 14 fewer shots than they had taken in their opener a week earlier.
The Princeton win ended Johns Hopkins' 37-game home winning streak, which leaves the Blue Jays tied with Syracuse from 1982-87 for the NCAA record for longest home winning streak in Division I lacrosse history. Hopkins also had its 17-game winning streak snapped.
Princeton, 2-0 on the young season, moved up to No. 5 in both the USILA coaches' poll and the Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Top 6 in both polls is this same, with Maryland the new No. 1 after its overtime win over Duke Saturday. Virginia, whom Princeton hosts Sunday (2), is the No. 2 team, followed by Duke, Navy, Princeton and Cornell.
Princeton's schedule includes five teams currently ranked in the Top 14.
