NEWARK, N.J. - Without injured middle hitter Brian Hamming, the Princeton men's volleyball team could not answer the height of the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders. The home squad rallied from a 1-0 deficit to send Princeton to its fifth EIVA Tait loss in seven matches.
Princeton jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 30-17 win in the opener. Hitting .452 in the opener and led by sophomore Peter Eichler's five kills, the Tigers looked in good position to avenge a stunning 3-2 loss at home two weeks ago.
The Scarlet Raiders turned the tide on Princeton in the second game. Despite seven kills on seven swings from freshman middle Michael Vincent, Princeton couldn't stop a Rutgers offense that hit .429 and pulled out a 30-25 win.
Following an ugly third game, which Princeton hit -.121 and lost 30-20, Rutgers clinched the match by hitting .303 in the fourth game and pulling out a 30-28 win. The fourth game featured 14 tie scores and six lead changes, but a final kill from Eric Honsberger clinched the match for Rutgers.
Eichler led Princeton with 16 kills, while Vincent had 14 kills, four blocks and a .348 attack percentage. Freshman setter Brandon Denham had 46 assists and senior libero Mark Stevens has 10 digs.
Princeton will face St. Francis Friday night at 7 p.m. at Dillon Gym.
