Alex Hewit, who leads Division I in save percentage, has been added to the list of nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the top honor in college men's lacrosse.
Hewit and Hofstra's Chris Unterstein were added to the nomination list, where they joined 23 others who had previously been named. The list will be paired down to five finalists next month, with the award to be presented June 1.
Hewit is the third Ivy League player on the list, along with Cornell's Joe Boulukos and Matt McMonagle. He is also one of three goalies, along with McMonagle and Navy's Matt Russell.
Hewit has a .670 save percentage, best in Division I, and a 5.77 goals-against average, third-best in Division I. He has made at least 12 saves seven times in 12 games, including 20 against top-ranked Virginia and 15 last Saturday in a 4-3 loss to Cornell. He made 48 saves while allowing 20 goals (a .706 save percentage) in games against Virginia, Hofstra and Cornell, the three-highest scoring teams in Division I.
His career goals-against average is 5.91, which would be the best in Division I history had he played the required 1,400 career minutes (he has played 913).
Hewit made 13 saves while allowing four goals in 51 minutes Tuesday night in Princeton's most recent game, an 11-5 win over Rutgers. The Tigers, ranked seventh in the USILA coaches' poll and ninth in the Inside Lacrosse media poll, finish the regular season with games at Dartmouth and Brown. Wins in both would assure the Tigers of at least a share of the Ivy title.
