Princeton, N.J. - Princeton University's Department of Athletics held the 2nd Annual Princeton Athletics Golf Classic - hosted by the Princeton Varsity Club (PVC) - on a cool Monday, May 8th afternoon at the scenic Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, NJ. Eighty golfers were on hand for the event which was created in 2005 by the PVC in support of Princeton's 38 intercollegiate programs and 1,200 student-athletes.
The format of the event was a five-person scramble, with each joined by a member of the Princeton varsity athletics coaching staff.
The Skey Group of Gerry Skey, Henry Patterson, P.J. Stevenson, Aristedes Georgantas, along with Head Women's Tennis coach Kathy Sell won the event by carding a 14 under par, 57 and were followed closely all day at the top of the leader board by a group led by Princeton alum and trustee Y.S. Chi (-12) and the Glenmede Trust Group headed by Todd Lincoln (-11).
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the day came when Craig Kochy aced the par 3 13th hole. "It was an exciting, once in a lifetime type of opportunity. This was truly the excitement of the day and for any golfer's career," said Assistant Women's Basketball coach Mary Gleason, the coaching staff representative for Kochy's group. Kochy's hole-in-one was the first in the history of the annual tournament and earned him a payout of one of four grand prizes offered at the hole.
Others taking advantage of the various contest opportunities out on the course were Joe Bardzilowski (closest to the pin, 2), P.J. Chew (longest drive, 7), Bill Durnan (longest drive, 14), and Mike Panzera (pot of gold, 15).
The day featured pre and post tournament social events, at which Director of Athletics Gary Walters spoke to all in attendance. Participants also had the opportunity to bid on great silent auction items that included travel accommodations, professional sport tickets, and Princeton athletic experiences and memorabilia.
