Dan Cocoziello is the top defenseman in Ivy League men's lacrosse. It's unanimous.
Cocoziello was the lone defenseman to be a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection and Princeton's lone first-team selection when the team was announced Thursday afternoon. The All-Ivy League team is voted on by the league's seven head coaches.
In addition to Cocoziello, Princeton had three second-team selections and three honorable mention selections.
Cornell midfielder Joe Boulukos, the only other unanimous selection, was named the league's Player of the Year. The first-team consisted of five Cornell players, three Dartmouth players and one player each from Princeton and Harvard.
Princeton and Cornell tied for the Ivy League championship.
Cocoziello became the first defenseman to win the league's Rookie of the Year award when he was honored a year ago, and he improved to a unanimous first-team selection this year. Beyond being the anchor of a defense ranked third nationally in goals-against average, Cocoziello also has three goals and two assists in transition.
Princeton's three second-team selections are attackman Peter Trombino, midfielder Mark Kovler and goalie Alex Hewit. Trombino is tied for the team lead in points with 35, and he leads the team in goals with 19. Kovler has 16 goals and seven assists as a freshman, while Hewit leads Division I in save percentage and is fourth in goals-against average. Hewit also has made at least 12 saves in eight of 14 games this year, including 15 against Cornell and 20 against top-rankd Virginia.
Scott Sowanick, who is tied with Trombino for the team lead in points, was an honorable mention selection. Cocoziello's fellow defensemen Zachary Jungers and Ryan Schoenig were named honorable mention as well. Princeton will host UMBC in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Saturday (noon).
