Hewit Named First-Team All-America

Alex Hewit has joined a pretty exclusive club, one with membership that now runs three deep.
Hewit, a sophomore, became the third Princeton goalie during Bill Tierney's 19 years as Tiger head coach to be named first-team All-America when the USILA announced its team between games of Saturday's Division I semifinals. Hewit joins Scott Bacigalup (1992-94) and Trevor Tierney (2001) as Tierney's first-team All-Americas in goal.
Hewit was second in Division I in save percentage and fourth in goals-against average. He made at least 12 saves nine times in Princeton's 16 games, including a season-best 20 in a 7-6 loss to UVa; no other goalie held Virginia to fewer than 12.
Hewit was one of five Princeton players to receive All-America recognition, and all five return for next season.
Dan Cocoziello, Hewit's classmate at both Princeton and previously the Delbarton School, was a second-team selection on defense. In addition to being a shut down defender, Cocoziello also added three goals and two assists in transition this season.
Zachary Jungers, a junior, earned third-team honors after moving from longstick midfielder to close defense.
Peter Trombino, the only player in school history with at least 20 goals and at least 10 assists as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, was an honorable mention All-America. Trombino led the Tigers with 22 goals and 40 points and tied for the team lead with 18 assists.
Mark Kovler, a freshman middie, was also an honorable mention pick after an 18-goal, eight-assist rookie season.
Princeton went 11-5 in 2006, winning a share of the Ivy League title and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Princeton returns eight of 10 starters.
