October 17, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Junior Holly McGarvie gave the 20th-ranked Princeton field hockey team a 1-0 lead a minute into Wednesday's game with Lehigh and it gave Princeton a lead it would hold throughout in a 4-2 win at Class of '52 Stadium. Sophomore Christina Bortz scored two goals in Princeton's fifth-straight win.
Princeton improved to 9-4 overall after picking up its fifth-consecutive win. The Tigers raced to a 4-0 lead in the game before the Mountain Hawks scored twice in the game's final seven minutes to close the final gap.
McGarvie one-timed a pass from junior Katie Kinzer 1:10 into the game for her sixth goal of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 by the half as Bortz scored an unassisted goal on a hard backhand from the circle at 21:28 and sophomore Katherine Cape tipped in a pass at 25:22 for her third goal of the season.
Princeton made the score 4-0 five minutes into the second half when Bortz lifted a rebound over Lehigh goalkeeper Jessica Miller to cap the Princeton scoring in the game. Bortz's two goals in the game gave her eight for the season to lead the team in that category.
Lehigh closed the final gap with two late goals. Kalynn Davis scored on a corner at 63:16 and Kara Zweizig tapped in the rebound of a shot that hit the post at 68:19.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray earned the win with one half of shutout play, while freshman Jennifer King made two saves in the second half.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday for an important Ivy League game at Harvard. The game pits the league's top two teams against one another.
