Princeton Travels To Navy For Fall Men's Lacrosse, Releases 2008 Schedule
October 09, 2007 | Men's Lacrosse
The 2008 season definitely includes a brand-new destination for the Princeton men's lacrosse team. The ultimate goal for the Tigers is still add a second one for the end.
Princeton will play a 13-game regular season in 2008, one that includes a game at Albany in the first-ever regular-season meeting between the schools. Princeton, like the rest of the college lacrosse world, is hoping to end its season Memorial Day Weekend in Foxborough, Mass., as the NCAA championships go to Gillette Stadium for the first time.
Princeton's 2007 season was a frustrating one, despite a 10-4 record, as the Tigers dropped one-goal games to eventual-champion Johns Hopkins (in double overtime), Virginia (in the final 30 seconds) and Georgetown (in overtime in the NCAA tournament). The Tigers return seven starters from a year ago, including two players ? goalie Alex Hewit and defenseman Dan Cocoziello ? who recently were ranked No. 1 nationally at their positions by Inside Lacrosse magazine.
Before Princeton gets to the 2008 season, it will play two fall games this Sunday in Annapolis, taking on Navy at noon and Maryland at 2 p.m. in an event that also includes Loyola. Princeton will host its alumni game Friday night, October 19, at 7:30 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The 2008 season will open Feb. 23 at home against Canisius, marking the third straight year that the Tigers host the Griffins to start a season. After that, it's back to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins in the second Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic. The 2008 event will have the same doubleheader ? Princeton vs. Hopkins, Virginia vs. Syracuse ? as in 2007, when the inaugural Face-Off Classic drew more than 20,000.
Princeton follows its Hopkins game by hosting Virginia and Hofstra on the next two Saturdays before heading to Albany to meet the Great Danes on Friday, April 21. The only previous meeting between the schools came in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA tournament at Class of 1952 Stadium, a game won by Princeton 16-10.
The second meeting against Albany will be followed four days later by the 86th meeting between Princeton and Rutgers. The Ivy League season then begins with a home game against Yale on Saturday, March 29.
The annual matchup against Syracuse comes up April 5 at the Carrier Dome, and the regular season ends with the remainder of the Ivy schedule, featuring home games against Penn and Cornell and games at Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown.
Princeton will need to replace first-team All-America Zachary Jungers on defense and All-Americas Peter Trombino and Scott Sowanick, who both started every game the last four years, on offense.
