Yale Ends Women's Soccer's Season with 3-1 Defeat
November 11, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Two Yale goals early in the second half moved the Bulldogs past the Princeton women's soccer team 3-1 Sunday afternoon on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium in the Tigers' season finale.
Vicki Anagnostopoulos had Princeton's goal in the 28th minute when she knocked in a rebound off an Ashley Beyers corner kick to tie the score. Yale had pulled ahead 10 minutes earlier when Maggie Westfal snuck a long-distance attempt under the crossbar, and the teams entered the half tied at 1-1.
Yale, which improved to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the Ivy League, scored two goals in the half's first seven minutes and held the advantage the rest of the way. Emma Whitfield scored after her first attempt was saved by Princeton keeper Maren Dale but wasn't held onto, and Whitfield scored the loose ball. Five minutes later, Becky Brown gave Yale the 3-1 lead when she fired from 20 yards just inside the right post.
Yale outshot the Tigers 18-13 and forced Dale to make six saves. Yale's Susan Starr saved seven. The game was the last for the five Tiger seniors, including Beyers, Dale, Diana Matheson, Melissa Whitley and Regina Yang. Princeton finishes the season at 8-8-1 overall and 4-3 in league play for its 11th straight non-losing campaign.
