Comunale, Ritter Pick Up Multiple Wins At Nittany Lion Open
December 02, 2007 | Wrestling
Freshman Tony Comunale and senior Sam Ritter both picked up multiple wins Sunday at the tough Nittany Lion Open, held at Penn State University. Nine Tigers competed in the loaded field, and it was Princeton's lightest (Comunale) and heaviest (Ritter) competitors that picked up the most wins.
Comunale picked up both of his wins in the chambionship bracket of the 125-pound weight class. He opened with a 10-6 victory over Ed Galvin of Sacred Heart and followed with an 11-2 win over Lock Haven's Nicholas Hyatt. He was knocked into the consolation bracket by a 10-4 loss to Army's Lance Penhale and had his day end with a 13-5 loss to Hofstra's Tyler Mashkow.
Ritter opened his heavyweight run with an 8-1 victory over Ryan Everhart, who was competing unattached. Rashard Goff, another unattached competitor, defeated Ritter 10-2, but the Tiger senior bounced back to pin Virginia's Calvin Cardillo in 2:30 to become Princeton's second wreslter with multiple victories Sunday.
Two other Tigers picked up opening-round wins. At 133 pounds, sophomore Nick Pereira defeated Kutztown's Bryce Ebert 5-0 before falling to both Tyler Anthony (VMI) and Nick Bridge (Cornell). Freshman Travis Erdman pinned Old Dominion's TC Pendleton in 4:52 to advance to the second round of the 165-pound weight class, but he fell to unattached Quentin Wright 11-0 and Virginia's Mike Sewell 8-2.
Jeff Kirchick (141), Marty Everin (157), Aaron Casp (157), Alex Enriquez (165) and Zach Morse (197) each fell in the first round.
