Davis Leads Princeton Past Canisius 18-7
February 24, 2007 | Men's Lacrosse
It took Tommy Davis less than one quarter of the first game of his sophomore season to better his freshman year assist total, and he didn't stop there.
Davis, who had one assist as a freshman, had five in Princeton's 2007 opener to along with a pair of goals for a career-high seven points as the Tigers ran past Canisius 18-7 in front of 1,107 fans at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Peter Trombino, Alex Haynie and freshman Rob Engelke all scored three goals for the Tigers.
With the win, Princeton avoided the upset bug that plagued the other three teams in next weekend's inaugural Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic in Baltimore, as Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Virginia will all enter the event with a loss. Princeton, ranked third this past week in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll behind the Blue Jays and Orange, takes on Johns Hopkins at noon at M&T Bank Stadium next Saturday, followed by Syracuse and UVa at 3.
“To be honest, I wish those teams hadn't lost,” said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. “Rankings don't mean much right now anyway. It'll still be a wild scene down there.”
Canisius scored first as Tom Hensel put in the first of his four just 1:41, but any chance of an upset disappeared as the Tigers scored the next six, including one goal and two assists from Davis as six different Tigers scored.
Davis had 15 goals to go along with his one assist last year in a season cut short by a shoulder injury that cost him the final six games of the regular season. He did return to score five goals in two NCAA tournament games.
“It's a good start,” Davis said. “We need to build on this. I tried not to force anything and take advantage of opportunities, and things worked out well today.”
Princeton led 10-5 at halftime and then broke it open with the first five of the second half. Hensel's fourth goal stopped the run, but Princeton scored three more after that.
Mark Kovler had two goals and an assist for the Tigers. Engelke's three matched Davis' total in Princeton's opener against Canisius a year ago and made them the only Princeton freshmen in the last 12 seasons to have three goals on opening day.
“It's like a dream come true, to be out there, playing for Princeton and score three goals in the first game,” Engelke said. “But it's only the first game.”
