Men's Squash Stays Unbeaten, Tops Yale 6-3
February 03, 2007 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team stayed in control of the Ivy League race by knocking off Yale 6-3 Saturday in New Haven, Conn. Playing a three-round format, Princeton built a 3-0 lead and held off a determined Bulldog squad with hard-fought wins in each of the last two sessions. Freshman David Canner helped build that lead by rallying for an impressive 3-1 win at No. 6.
Kimlee Wong gave Princeton a 1-0 lead with a 9-7, 9-7, 9-1 victory at No. 3, but Yale had picked up first-game wins at both Nos. 6 and 9. That would be all the Bulldogs would get, as Canner picked up 9-6, 9-4 and 9-1 wins to clinch the match, and Tom McKay would close out Bill Hatch 10-8, 9-3, 9-3 wins at No. 9.
Mike Gilman moved the Princeton lead to 4-0 with a 9-1, 9-9, 9-0, 9-1 victory over Colin Campbell. His resiliency after a tough second game was critical, as Yale picked up victories by Max Samuel (No. 2) and Francis Johnson (No. 5). Samuel pulled out a hard-fought 3-2 win over Hesham El Halaby, as both players alternated wins until Samuel claimed the fifth with a 9-4 victory. Johnson topped freshman Santiago Imberton 9-0, 9-2, 7-9, 9-6 to close the deficit to 4-2.
It wouldn't get any closer, as No. 4 player Vincent Yu closed the match with a 9-2, 9-7, 9-3 victory over Aaron Fuchs, and No. 1 player Mauricio Sanchez followed closely with a 9-4, 9-1, 9-0 win over Nick Chirls. Preston Comey led 2-0 at No. 7, but Todd Ruth rallied for an impressive 3-2 win. Unfortunately for the rest of his team, it wouldn't be enough to earn the team win.
Princeton would clinch the Ivy League title outright with wins next weekend over Dartmouth and Harvard, both of which will take place at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
