Princeton Tops Harvard, Falls to St. Francis at ECACs

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 18th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split two games on Saturday at the ECAC Championships, defeating Harvard 10-8 to advance to the semifinals, where Princeton was edged by 14th-ranked St. Francis 9-7. Princeton will face Bucknell tomorrow in the third-place game.
Princeton rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Harvard in the opening game. Harvard held leads of 4-3 and 5-4 after each of the first two quarters. Princeton outscored Harvard 3-1 in the third quarter to move ahead 7-6 and stretched its lead to 10-8 at the finale. Senior Zach Beckmann scored four goals and junior Alex Edmunds added two. Four others scored single goals.
In the nightcap the Tigers fell behind early and trailed 4-1 at the end of the quarter. Each team scored a single goal in the second quarter giving the Terriers a 5-2 lead at the half. In the third quarter, Princeton started strong and scored two quick goals to cut the lead to a single goal at 5-4, but St. Francis responded with four unanswered goals to close the quarter and led 9-4 entering the final period. Princeton added three goals in that final stanza, but could get no closer in the 9-7 loss. Sophomore Mark Zalewski scored three goals to lead Princeton in the game.
