Men's Water Polo Splits on Day 2 of SoCal Tourney

LOS ANGELES -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split its games on the second day of the So Cal Tournament to place 11th in the 18-team field, which featured 14 ranked teams. Princeton fell early in the day to seventh-ranked Long Beach State before edging 16th-ranked Redlands 12-11 in quadruple overtime.
Princeton entered Sunday playing for a spot between ninth and 12th in the final rundown and would up 11th with wins over two ranked teams and placing first among teams from the East Coast.
Princeton opened the day with a 12-6 loss to seventh-ranked Long Beach State. Sophomore Jeff Cole and junior Mark Zalewski both scored twice in the loss while sophomore goalkeeper Mike Merlone made 15 saves in three quarters of action.

The loss sent Princeton to the 11th-place game at a meeting 16th-ranked Redlands, the team ranked just behind Princeton in national polls. Princeton trailed through much of the first half and then had a late two-goal lead with just over a minute left on the game clock before a pair of Redlands goals in the final minute sent the game to overtime tied at 10 all.
The game went to overtime and Redlands went ahead 11-10 with a goal in the first overtime, but the Tigers evened things up with one in the second extra session. Neither team scored in the first sudden death overtime before Zalewski scored the game winner with 1:55 left on the clock in the second sudden death overtime period.
Cole led the Tigers with four goals in the game, while senior Brendan Colgan, junior Douglas Wigley and Zalewski added two goals. Merlone made 16 saves in the Tiger cage.
