Navy Edges Princeton in Men's Water Polo

PRINCETON -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team dropped its league finale on Sunday afternoon to 16th-ranked Navy 8-6. With the loss, the Tigers place second in the Southern standings and will likely be the second seed for the upcoming Southern Championships.
Princeton fell behind early, trailing by as many as four at the half with Navy leading 5-1. Princeton rallied as the third quarter began and scored four unanswered goals to draw even at 5-5 with two minutes left in the quarter, but the Midshipmen were able to pull back ahead 6-5 in the closing seconds of the period by converting on a five-meter shot.
Junior Douglas Wigley scored twice to lead the Tigers, while four others added goals. Sophomore Mike Merlone made 10 saves.
Princeton is now 13-9 overall and finished the CWPA Southern Division regular season with a 6-2 record to finish second behind 7-1 Navy. The Tigers play a non-league game on Wednesday night at home against Queen's before resuming their season Nov. 7-8 at the Southern Championships, which will be contested at DeNunzio Pool.
