Jordan Culbreath Unanimously Selected First-Team All-Ivy; Eight Tigers Honored
November 25, 2008 | Football, General
Two days after posting a career day in a 28-10 win over Dartmouth, junior running back Jordan Culbreath was one of two players unanimously selected first-team All-Ivy by the Ivy League coaches. Culbreath led the Ivy League with 1,206 yards rushing and recorded the fifth-highest single-game rushing total when he ran for 276 yards against Dartmouth.
Culbreath was Princeton's only first-team All-Ivy selection, although seven of his teammates joined him on the All-Ivy team. Senior wide receiver Will Thanheiser, junior offensive lineman Mark Paski and senior defensive lineman Pete Buchignani all earned second-team All-Ivy honors, while senior punter Ryan Coyle, senior defensive lineman Matt Koch, junior linebacker Scott Britton and sophomore linebacker Steve Cody all earned All-Ivy honorable mention.
Culbreath is Princeton's first Ivy League rushing champion since 2002, when Cameron Atkinson led the league, and he is also the first Princeton runner to rush for 10 touchdowns since Atkinson. He finished his season ranked eighth nationally in rushing was the Ivy League Tri-Offensive Player of the Week after recording the fifth-highest rushing total in league history.
Thanheiser was on pace to become the third Princeton wide receiver to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season before falling victim to bad weather conditions at Yale and the all-time rushing day by Culbreath. Regardless, his 814 yards receiving is the seventh-most in Princeton history, and he scored two touchdowns in a thrilling 31-26 Ivy League win at Cornell.
Buchignani has started 34 games for Princeton and has been a key contributor throughout his career, including the Ivy League championship season of 2006. He recorded 32 tackles this season, including four for loss, and added 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. This is his third All-Ivy honor; he earned honorable mention distinction in each of the last two years.
Paski has started every game of his career on the offensive line and led a Princeton rushing attack that led the Ivy League this season. The right tackle, he was also in charge of protecting the blind side of left-handed starting quarterback Brian Anderson. Paski is the only freshman to have ever started all 10 games on the offensive line, a feat he accomplished during Princeton's Ivy League championship season.
Coyle, the first-team All-Ivy punter last season, sacrificed yards for better placement this season and still managed an impressive 40.9-yard punting average. He ends his career as Princeton's career leader in punting average and pinned 13 of his punts inside the 20 yard line this season; Coyle had an Ivy League long punt of 76 yards this season.
Both Britton and Cody give Princeton a solid foundation on defense next season. Cody became Princeton's first sophomore to lead the team in tackles since Justin Stull in 2003; Cody recorded 85 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, and added two sacks. Britton recorded 81 tackles and four sacks and forced a key late fumble in a three-point win at Columbia.
