Men's Squash Sweeps Harvard To Clinch 2008 Ivy Championship
February 10, 2008 | Men's Squash
It's one thing to sweep every team in the Ivy League. It's another to sweep every individual match, but that's exactly what the 2007-08 Princeton men's squash team did against its Ancient Eight competition. Princeton clinched its third straight Ivy League title with a 9-0 victory at Harvard, site of next weekend's CSA national team championships.
Princeton ends its regular season 9-1, 6-0 in the Ivy League, and will enter next weekend as the No. 2 seed in the championship main draw. Trinity, which topped Princeton 6-3 in the regular season, will be the top seed, and Harvard and Yale will meet Wednesday night to determine the third seed.
Princeton swept all 27 games in the win over Harvard and took a major stop on the way to a pair of individual honors. Junior No. 1 player Mauricio Sanchez swept Colin West 9-7, 9-2, 9-3 to bolster his chances for a second straight Ivy League Player of the Year award, while freshman David Letourneau maintained his perfect record with a 3-0 win at No. 3 and remains a strong candidate for Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Princeton was certainly the team of the year. Not only did the Tigers win all 54 individual matches in Ivy play, but they won 162 of 168 individual games.
"This has been a very exciting season for us," veteran head coach Bob Callahan said. "It has certainly been one of the best teams in my time here, and we're looking forward to getting back out there next weekend. The courts played well today, and it was good for our younger guys, the freshmen and sophomores, to get up here and play on the courts."
