Men's Squash Sweeps Penn, Eyes Potential Ivy Championship Weekend
February 07, 2008 | Men's Squash
Following its 9-0 victory against Yale on Saturday, and with a big Dartmouth-Harvard road trip coming up, the Princeton men's squash team couldn't afford a letdown Wednesday night at the Ringe Squash Courts at the University of Pennsylvania. The experienced Tigers were more than up for the challenge, winning eight matches by 3-0 scores in a 9-0 sweep of Penn.
Playing without David Canner and Philip Sopher, Princeton had little trouble improving to 7-1, 4-0 in the Ivy League. None of the top six players lost more than five points in any game, which included a 9-2, 9-5, 9-1 victory for No. 1 Mauricio Sanchez over Penn's Lee Rosen. Freshman David Letourneau continued to build on his Ivy League Rookie of the Year resume with a 9-4, 9-4, 9-0 win at No. 3, while sophomore Santiago Imberton was dominant in a 9-1, 9-2, 9-2 win at No. 5.
The closest match of the evening would go Princeton's way, as senior co-captain Brandon Bascom fought back from a game-one loss to defeat Parker Justi 7-9, 9-3, 9-1, 9-10, 9-7 win.
Princeton will play Saturday at Dartmouth (noon) and then Sunday at Harvard (noon). A sweep would give Princeton its third straight Ivy League title, including its second straight outright title, and would clinch the No. 2 seed in the CSA team championships, which will be held Feb. 15-17 at Harvard.
