Hewit Named Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Player Of The Week
March 31, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
Alex Hewit, who was the difference in two Princeton wins last week, was named the Ivy League men's lacrosse Player of the Week. With that honor safely tucked away, Hewit will lead the Tigers against the No. 1 team in the country this weekend.
Hewit made 10 saves while allowing six goals in a win over Rutgers last Tuesday in a game that wasn't decided until the senior All-America goalie robbed Justin Pennington on the doorstep with six seconds left. Hewit followed that with 17 saves while allowing seven goals, including 13 saves with one goal allowed in the crucial second and third quarters, in an 11-8 win over Yale in Princeton's Ivy opener.
The combined total for Hewit in the two games added up to a .675 save percentage, and Hewit finishes his career against Yale having won all three starts with a career .705 save percentage against the Bulldogs. It was also the second straight year that Hewit has won the Ivy Player of the Week award after facing Yale.
Princeton is now ranked 15th in this week's USILA coaches' poll and 14th in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Tigers travel to face the No. 1 team in both polls, Syracuse, this Saturday in a game that has been moved to 3:30.
Princeton and Syracuse have combined to win 14 of the last 20 NCAA championships.
