Princeton Heads To Brown For Ivy League "Co-Championship" Game
April 30, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
Call it the Ivy League men's lacrosse Co-Championship Game. Don't like that one? How about a game of winner-take-some?
Whatever you call it, there will be plenty on the line when Princeton travels to Brown Saturday afternoon (1, WPRB FM 103.3).
Princeton and Brown are both 4-1 in the league, and the winner of the game is guaranteed a share of the Ivy League championship with Cornell, who has already completed its league schedule at 5-1.
As important as that is the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which will go to Princeton if it defeats Brown and to Cornell if Brown defeats Princeton. The first tiebreaker for the automatic bid is head-to-head matchup, and Princeton has already defeated Cornell, while Cornell has defeated Brown.
Princeton is coming off an 11-9 loss at Dartmouth last weekend, while Brown lost 11-7 to Cornell. Princeton is looking to reverse a season-long trend of falling behind on the road, a habit that has resulted in the Tigers' having trailed for 272:11 of a possible 301:53 in its first five road games this season. Princeton has also never led at any point of regulation in any of those five games, with only a win in overtime against Harvard.
Brown, ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense at 6.9 goals allowed per game, and Princeton are no strangers to close games. Princeton has defeated Brown by a single goal each of the last two years, and 13 of the last 19 Princeton-Brown games have been decided by three goals or fewer. Even during Princeton's perfect 1997 season, the Tigers only defeated Brown by three; the average margin of victory in Princeton's other five Ivy games that year was 12.4 goals.

The Ivy League Co-Championship Game ? The winner of the Princeton-Brown game will finish as Ivy League co-champion with Cornell.
What am I bid? ? The Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament will go to Cornell (if Brown beats Princeton) or Princeton (if Princeton beats Brown).
Just to clear things up ? The Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament is decided by head-to-head matchup in the case of a two-way tie. Since Princeton defeated Cornell, Princeton would get the bid in the event that the two are co-champions. Since Cornell defeated Brown, Cornell would get the bid in the event that those two are co-champions. Had there been a three-way tie, the first tiebreaker would still have been head-to-head among the three, followed by several other tiebreakers based upon results against the remaining teams in order of finish. If none of those served to break the tie, then a random draw would have determined the bid.
More clarity ? The tiebreaking procedures determine only the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The winner of the Princeton-Brown game and Cornell will be considered Ivy League co-champions.
History lesson ? Cornell is assured of at least a share of the Ivy League championship, which will be the 23rd in Big Red history. Princeton has already won 23 Ivy League championships; a win over Brown would give Princeton its 24th league title. Brown, with six, is in third place all-time.
The whammy ? Princeton has defeated Brown 14 straight times.
Close shaves ? Of Princeton's 14 wins against Brown during its current streak, nine have been by three goals or fewer.
More shaves ? Princeton has defeated Brown by one goal each of the last two years.
No place like road ? Princeton is 6-1 at home and 1-4 away this season.
Another road ? Princeton is 23-6 at home and 10-15 away since the start of the 2005 season.
More road ? Princeton has not had the lead at any point of the first, second, third or fourth quarter of any game away from home this season; Princeton's only lead on the road came at Harvard, when Princeton won in overtime.
Still more road ? Princeton has played five away games this season. The Tigers have never led at any point of those five games other than at the very end of the Harvard game in
overtime, have been tied for 29:42 and have trailed for 272:11.
Do the math ? Princeton is 7-0 this season when allowing fewer than 10 goals and 0-5 when allowing 10 or more.
History lesson ? A Princeton win over Brown would give Princeton a share of the Ivy title; a loss to Brown would leave Princeton in third place in the league. Princeton has not finished below second in the Ivy League since 1990.
Tommy boy ? Tommy Davis leads Princeton in goals (21) and assists (16). The last player to lead Princeton in both in the same season was Justin Tortolani, who had 33 goals and 16 assists in 1990; Peter Trombino led the 2006 team in goals and tied for the team lead in assists.
Injury update ? Mark Kovler, who had been Princeton's leading goal scorer after nine games, broke his ankle in practice on April 10 and is out for the rest of the season. Rich Sgalardi suffered a sprained ankle in practice April 17 and missed the Cornell and Dartmouth games; his status for the rest of the season is uncertain.
Senior citizen ? Peter Striebel has four goals and nine assists in his last five games after having three goals and six assists for his first three seasons and seven games.
More senior ? Bob Schneider has 18 goals this season after having 19 for his first three seasons combined.
