Princeton In The MLL (Updated): Hubbard Chases Career Record; Striebel Plays In All-Star Game
July 18, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
Jesse Hubbard '98 is Princeton's career leader with 163 goals, and he's hardly lost his touch since graduating.
Hubbard, of the Los Angeles Riptide, has 238 career Major League Lacrosse goals after scoring twice in Sunday's game game against the Chicago Machine. The MLL career record is 239, held by former UMass All-America Mark Millon; Hubbard's next game will be Saturday at home against the Philadelphia Barrage.
Hubbard leads the Riptide with 17 goals this year, and he also has 10 assists. He was acquired in a preseason trade with the New Jersey Pride, with whom he had spent his entire career prior to this season.
Hubbard is one of 12 Princeton alums on active Major League Lacrosse rosters this season. Matt Striebel '01 of the Barrage was the only one of the group to participate in the MLL all-star game, which was won 31-15 by the West team last Thursday night. Striebel, who had an assist for the East, is also featured on the current cover of Inside Lacrosse magazine, which calls him possibly the "top midfielder in the world."
Striebel is one of three Princetonians on the Barrage, which has won the last two and three of the last four MLL titles. Striebel (23 goals, eight assists) and Ryan Boyle '04 (15G, 16A) are tied for seventh in the league in points with 31. Peter Trombino '07 has 11 goals for the Barrage, five of which came in the team's last game a win over the Pride.
The Barrage, which played originally in Bridgeport before moving to Philadelphia, is a homeless team this year, with games spread throughout the country. Despite the constant travels, the Barrage is currently tied for first place in the East with Rochester and Boston.
The team with the most Princeton alums is the Denver Outlaws, which features Dan Cocoziello '08, Zachary Jungers '07, Pete Striebel '08 and Josh Sims '00, who has been hurt all season. The Outlaws lead the Western Conference, 1.5 games ahead of Hubbard's Riptide.
Cocoziello has played in the last three Outlaws games after being drafted and then traveling to Europe with the Princeton team in June. Cocoziello has reunited with his Princeton defensive teammmate Jungers, who has played every game for the Outlaws. Striebel, Matt's younger brother, has scored two goals in his first two MLL games.
Washington features former All-Americas Christian Cook '98 on defense and Scott Sowanick '07 in the midfield.
Damien Davis '03 is one of the top defensive players on the Pride. Alex Hewit '08 is currently the backup goalie for New Jersey.
