Kevin Unterstein Named Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach
September 03, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
Kevin Unterstein, the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, has been named assistant men's lacrosse coach at Princeton University. Unterstein, who will work with the Tiger defense and face-off specialists, replaces Greg Raymond, who left to become the top assistant at Drexel.
Unterstein graduated from Hofstra this past spring with a degree in sociology after a four-year career as a shortstick defensive midfielder.
"I'm very excited about coming to Princeton," Unterstein said. "It's a great school with a long history in lacrosse, and I appreciate the opportunity."
Unterstein is a native of Shoreham, N.Y., and he was a high school All-America at Shoreham-Wading River, where he won four Suffolk County championships and one state championship.
Part of a three-man brother act that saw his older brother Chis and twin brother Mike also play for the Pride, Kevin Unterstein helped Hofstra to a No. 2 national ranking and No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament as a sophomore and then earned USILA All-America honors as a junior. The Pride won the 2008 CAA Tournament championship by defeated Drexel in overtime after trailing by two goals late in regulation, and Unterstein was named to the All-Tournament team in addition to first-team All-CAA and Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Unterstein's oldest brother, Bob, played for Penn.
"Kevin and his brothers always stood out to me," said Tiger head coach Bill Tierney. "He's a very tenacious guy. He's going to be working with a very young defense, but one that has a great deal of potential. We also have five or six new face-off guys."
The defense that Unterstein will coach needs to replace graduated All-Americas Alex Hewit and Dan Cocoziello, as well as four-year shortstick midfielder Zack Goldberg. Princeton does return starters Chris Peyser and Jeremy Hirsch, longstick midfielder Charlie Kolkin and shortstick Brendan Reilly and adds a deep freshman class.
