January 26, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- The ninth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team shook off the rust from its 16-day layoff for exams with a 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Monday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Seniors Lee Jubinville and Brandan Kushniruk scored for the Tigers.
Princeton jumped ahead early in the game as Jubinville connected for his fifth goal of the season just 47 seconds into the contest. Junior Dan Bartlett, playing on a line with Jubinville and senior Brett Wilson for the first time this season, worked the puck to Wilson behind the net. Wilson stepped to the side and fed Jubinville in the slot for a one-timer that beat Robert Morris goaltender Jim Patterson on the glove side.
Despite being outshot more than 2 to 1 in the first period, the Colonials evened the scored on their first of five power plays in the game. Denny Urban took a point shot that was blocked. The puck caromed to Chris Kushneriuk who took a quick shot that was saved, but Chris Margott put home the rebound and the first period ended tied at 1-1.
The Tigers began to slowly take over control of the game in the second period and cashed in on their fourth power play of the game. Sophomore Kevin Lohry worked the puck to junior Brad Schroeder at the point. Schroeder then fired a shot on goal that was redirected by Kushniruk in front for his fourth goal of the season. With the tally, three of his four goals this season have been game winners.
Princeton came close to taking a 3-1 lead later in the period shorthanded as Lohry knocked in the rebound of a shot, but the puck was ruled to have been played by a high stick.
The Tigers continued to pour on the pressure in the final period, garnering the first 15 shots of the third period before the Colonials managed a shot. Princeton outshot Robert Morris 18-7 in the final period, but the biggest save belonged to Tiger junior goaltender Zane Kalemba, who reached behind him to make a glove save on Josh Jones in the closing minutes.
Kalemba finished the game with 21 saves while Patterson made 44. The Tigers outshot RMU 46-22.
Princeton snapped its three-game losing skid and is now 14-5 overall this season. The Tigers return to league play on Friday night at Yale.
