Yale Tops Men's Hockey 3-1
January 30, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Mark Arcobello's goal late in the second period lifted 18th-ranked Yale to a 3-1 win over the ninth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Ingalls Rink. After falling behind 1-0, senior Brett Wilson evened the score for the Tigers but two power-play goals gave Yale the win.
In a game that featured the teams with the two highest shot totals in the country, there were several scoring chances as the teams combined for 75 shots in the game. Yale had 42 shots as the Tigers surrendered 40 shots for the first time this season.
Princeton had the game's first great scoring chance when two Yale penalties gave the Tigers a long two-man advantage. Immediately off the face-off, sophomore Taylor Fedun rocketed a shot off the far goal post, which proved a sign of things to come in the game for the Tigers. Yale killed off the penalties and used the momentum the kill generated to go ahead 1-0 when Sean Backman scored at 13:46 of the period on a rebound.
Princeton drew even less than a minute into the second period when Wilson netted his sixth goal of the season. Off the rush, senior Lee Jubinville hit Wilson with a pass as he trailed the play and Wilson scored with a snapshot high on the glove side. Junior Dan Bartlett assisted on the goal. Moments later, Bartlett appeared to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead with a blast from the face-off dot. The referee immediately signaled no-goal, but the goal light did go on. After a brief discussion between the official and goal judge, the goal was ruled to have not gone in the net, although a replay of the goal showed it did in fact go in and then bounce out.
Later in the period, Princeton had its second long two-man advantage and was unable to convert. Yale then had a two-man advantage of its own and cashed in with 1:54 left in the period on Arcobello's goal from along the goal line.
Princeton had several chances in the third period, including a point-blank shot from Jubinville that rang off the goal post. Yale added a third goal with 1:13 left in the game, also on the power play.
Yale outshot Princeton 42-33. Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made a career-high 39 saves in the loss, while Alec Richards stopped 32 Princeton shots.
The loss drops Princeton to 14-6 overall and 8-5 in the ECAC, while Yale is now 14-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in league play. The Tigers complete the weekend tomorrow at Brown at 4 p.m.
